Evaluation of the Seagate Barracuda IV HDD

I bought this drive for my pilot project (system3 - more info on main page) as I needed a larger drive to replace the existing IBM (DPTA-371360 Deskstar) drive. I've been fairly happy with the IBM drives that I've encountered, but there where just to much uncertainty about the reliability of the GXP/GV Deskstar series at the time. So I decided to opt for a 60 GB Barracuda IV (model ST360021A) to see if i where as good as it was cracked up to be.

I was not dissapointed. Of course it's not a silent drive according to my standards, but it certainly the best drive that I've encountered so far (by december 2001). Mounted in a novibes frame, it is barely audiable at all in it's idle mode. At it's worst it sounds a little bit like the discrete whistling of a kettle boiling up, but these conditions are infrequent.

I'll just skip the performance bit, it is fast and all that stuff. Looking at the technincal sheet for the drive, extracting relevant info.

  • Idle mode (typical) powerconsumption, 8.0 Watts
  • Read/Write/Seek (typical) powerconsumption, 12.2 Watts
  • Ambient operational temperature, [0 .. 60] C

The typical sound power levels are :

  • Idle, 24 dBA
  • Quiet Seek, 28 dBA
  • Performance Seek, 33 dBA

These measures are according to ISO document 7779. I haven't read this, so I don't really have a clue as to what the measurment environment or locations are. From what I understand it is not a "real" world measurment in a cabinet, and actuall noise levels might be higer depending on the cabinett/mounting system for the drive. Other measurment standards for soundpower that I've encountered so fare is ISO-9296, I dug into the search engines but never managed to come up with anything. If anyone reading this knows how to get hold of these documents, please let me know. I would be much obliged :)

Anyway I'll get to check this with real world measures, when i do a re-measurment of the pilot project with the new drive. I then also have a refrence point in the existing data, using the IBM (DPTA-371360 Deskstar) drive.
